Why not try Laurel High School? They were receptive last year. The fact that all PG County events were cancelled the night before the meet couldn't be helped; the decision was handed down by the Superintendant of Schools.
Dustin, you are still in high school, right? Talk to your principal or your gym teacher.

Re: Special Olympics Powerlifting « Result #10 on Jul 29, 2010, 8:51am »
My (limited) experience with Special Olympians at powerlifting meets has been pretty good. I remember one kid in particular back in the 90s. Despite having Downs Syndrome, he was very coachable, until he ran into trouble in the bench press. It took a little effort by his father and a couple of judges & competitors to get him refocused. Once his head was straight, he finished the meet.
Sounds like any other powerlifter, doesn't it?
Iain Burgess has been helping some Special Olympians at a gym in Ellicott City.

Has anyone heard about plans for any Maryland meets (USAPL) for the rest of the year? It's almost August and I still haven't seen anything pop up on the calendar for this year.

Bit of an old thread, but since coming back I have had a devil of a time deciding on a routine. ( I've changed routines as often as underwear!!) LOL. I just can seem to fine one I like. SO!
I have decided to go back to what worked for me in the 80's I don't use %, I just keep detailed record of weight lifted and adjust as needed.
12 week cycle
First 4 weeks weeks 1&2 2x10 weeks 3&4 2x8 ------------------- next 4 weeks Weeks 5-6-7-8 2x5 ------------------ last 4 weeks weeks 9&10 1x3 which I base my opener on weeks 11&12 1x2 which I base my second attempt on

Olympic Weightlifting Clinics at SSPT « Result #21 on Jul 24, 2010, 7:48am »
Coming next month and then again in September, we're hosting two OL clinics at SSPT. If you know anyone who might be interested in attending, please spread the word...
beat today. heading to OC thursday night for the following week so i've got to put some volume in between today and tomorrow. hopefully hedlesky will pick up his phone and let me train with him. if not, golds here I come!!!!
I was able to catch most of your lifts during the online feed, and I was impressed not only with your lifts, but the level of competition in general. Your squats looked strong. I think I only caught one of your benches. The last deadlift surprised me, given the fact that you've hit that weight before, these things happen when you're talking about travelling as far as you did.
The guy who bombed in the DL was a shame. He was strong as hell, but attempted something he shouldn't. Hopefully this was a learning experience for him.
Yea again I'm really not sure what happened on the last dead but I think I may have used too much speed allowing the bar to get infront of me. I'll go over it with Matt and anyone on here when I get it posted. I don't think it was a strength issue as it travelled pretty d**n fast till I dropped it!
And that guy who bombed was a effing moron. That kid had to weigh every bit of 230 and was absolutely effing jacked but in warmups, he took a 645 final deadlift warmup and muscled it up. It looked like a decent second attempt then he went and opened with 705? Absolutely ridiculous. I shoook his hand afterwards and congratulated him on being stronger than a fu*%ing ox on steroids but his loss was my gain on this one. Time to get back to training to catch up to these boys.
after really reviewing my deadlift form in numerous videos and watching others i may have found my issue. My form sucks. my hips always shoot up first leaving me with a collapsed chest and almost stiff legged dead. I was really trying to adjust to lift properly today and it was difficult. I don't know how i got an almost 620 dead with that form because i feel like a weakling now. gotta take 2 steps back to go 1 step forward in the right direction. thank god im not doing a meet until after summer. more later.

2010 Raw Nationals Meet Write Up « Result #27 on Jul 20, 2010, 10:49am »
This year the Raw National Championship was held in Denver and was a super well run event. Probably the best and most professionally run meet I have ever attended. Jen and Dan Gaudreau did an excellent job.
I arrived to Denver on Friday to acclimate to the elevation for a few days. It's not radically different until you walk up a flight of stairs and are completely winded! This would obviously affect sprinters or endurance atheletes more but I don't know if it has a huge effect on single lift powerlifting. By Sunday I was ready to compete. I weighed in at 213, the heaviest I have ever been. I'm not sure of the weights of the other competitors but the top 4 were all shorter and considerably heavier then me. The one guy who was primed for the win looked like he cut from 230+ and just left a body building competition (too bad he bombed in the deadlift!).
I was very anxious/nervous getting ready for warmups and leading up to the lifting. I don't really know why but the adrenaline was really flowing and took a lot of focus to keep it in check. I guess it's a good thing to still get nervous every now and then, it keeps us motivated and focused.
Squats: 452, 485 PR, 501 PR I opened with 452 which was probably the worst of the three squats. It was miuch harder then it should have been and was pretty sloppy. I took it too fast and got a little loose in the hole. 485 was a solid second attempt and a meet PR. I stuck with the plan and went with 501 for a 22 pound meet PR and a 33 pound increase from last meet and I smoked this one! A big grinder but it was just solid and clean. Much more smooth then the 495 in the gym two weeks ago.
Bench: 309, 325, 341 PR It seemed that all the nerves evaporated after the 501 successful squat. That had weighed on my mind alot recently. Although I was supremely confident I would smoke it, I still placed a lot of emphasis on finally breaking that 500 barrier in a meet. Benches were even better then the squats. 309 was solid as was 325. Each felt identical. Again I stuck with the plan and went for 341 for a 16 pound meet PR. The first two were slow off my chest and Mark Daniel instructed me to really explode of the chest to complete this lift. Well explode it did for three white lights!
Deadlifts: 551, 590PR, 601 fail Heading into the deadlifts, my immediate goals were to qualify for the Arnold and place well. Placing was my primary concern. 551 opener was nearly effortless. The original plan was to go 584 but upon calculation, I needed at least a 1430 to qualify for the Arnold. I got a little greedy and upped the attempt to 590 for a 11 pound meet PR (not a big deal though as I doubled 584 in training recently). 590 was a bit tougher then expected and I thought I was done after that one. In order the catch the next guy, I would have needed to attempt 617 for the tie then beat him on bodyweight. I had done 611 in training recently but not after a full meet so rather then get greedy, Mark and I decided to stick with 601 and let the cards fall where they may.
I'm not sure exactly what happened but I got the bar just over my knees pretty quickly then it felt like it just hit a wall. Looking at the video it may have gotten a bit in front of me. I was pretty angry at this one as I've done this weight multiple times in training and felt there was just no excuse for me to miss it. I don't think it was a fatigue issue but I'm just not sure. I generally tend to generate more speed on my third deadlift attempts and occasionally, this causes me to lose my balance. So this next cycle, speed training will play a larger role due to the obvious success it resulted in with my squat and bench training.
Once the lifting was done, I was awarded 5th place and believe it or not, this is probably my proudest placing in powerlifting as the top 4 were abovery *friendly* persone horses and the guys I beat were very strong as well. The top guy finished with a 1703 telling me I've got some major work to do. So my first real foray into the 220's resulted in a 1433 PR total (increase of 78 pounds from last meet) and was pretty succesful even though I have a lot of work to do.
I'm now going to focus on continuing to increase all three lifts with special emphasis on the deadlift for this cycle. I will compete in the VA States in September then the NOTLD Pro Deadlift meet in October where I'll be looking for a 630+ pull (in gear of course) and most likely the American Open in December. These may be my last three meets for a long time as I am planning to start grad school in January and really have no clue if I will be able to train then due to time constraints.
I'd like to thank all my training partners and coaches for their continued support during this training cycle. Mark Daniel and Jeff Li for coaching and e-coaching me on the meet day and Rebecca Myers for handling me during the meet. Matt and Siouxz for providing the best training environment possible and their support and everyone else I train with for pushing me to continually improve and be a force in whatever weight class I lift in.
There were several other MD lifters at this meet who did quite well but I'll let them share their experiences. Look for a video of my lifts in the next day or so.

Mike's Zombie Killing Log Pt.2 « Result #37 on Jul 15, 2010, 10:00am »
14 and a half weeks until the NOTLD. Time to get that disaster of a meet out of my mind and work on getting some pounds onto the deadlift bar.
The NOTLD is based on bodyweight. To show how serious I am about not just showing up and having a good time, I started working with Shelby Starnes to get my weight down and keep my strength up. Anything less than first place is a total failure. I dont care who else is going, I will win the whole thing.
Today, Thursday, July 15th, is my first real workout after the meet and also my first day of my diet... so here we go.
Thursday-7-15-10- Deload Lower
RAW Sqwatz- worked up to 500x8
Pin Pulls- At the knee- doubled purples 425x3x3
Hamstring Curls- Green Band 2x20xeach leg
Ab Pull Downs-Blue + Green 3x10<~~~ PR on band tension... if that even matters.
Now, time to eat my face off for the rest of the day... current weight=277.4lbs

Re: Mike's Insane Trip to Nationals « Result #38 on Jul 15, 2010, 9:50am »
Wish I had something good to say about my performance at the meet but I dont. No real excuse. I was just too weak to lift the weights. Got all my openers at least and they were all ridiculously easy.
Went: 630, 480, 727 for an 1800 something total and a first place trophy. My 810 deadlift was about one inch from lockout but I just put it down for some stupid reason. What a waste. Oh well.
I might start a new log on here to chronicle the diet and training insanity that is leading up to the night of the living dead in ocotober.
my deadlifts are seriously out of whack. 2 weeks ago for 5 i hit 455 and stopped short knowing that i could hit higher numbers but i wanted to progress slowly. i felt 475 x 3 would have been very do-able but i was wrong. nothing felt right and the farthest i got the weight out of all 9 billion attempts was to my knees. i felt like the weight was way to out in front of me and my lower back was rounding and it was completely frustrating. so i dropped down to 455 and then threw 455 up like it was 225. WTF?!?! im thinking i had bad sleep last night and not much to eat and immediately upon waking from a nap, hit the gym. these things may have affected me on top of pulling after maxing out in almost full gear with box squats....but STILL i believe i should've pulled that weight regardless. more later.

I’m back!
Low Box Squat 2×5 @ 45 95×5 135×3 185×3 225×3 275×3 315×1 335×1 345×1 That’s just 10 pounds off an all time PR for this lift, and at the time, that translated to a squat between 435 and 455 or so, so I’m pretty happy.
RDL 45×5 135×5 3×5 @ 225
KB swings 2×8 @ 20kg
Pull down abs 2×20 @ 120
That was enough for the day. My work capacity is terrible.

ME Upper monday 7-12-10
2 Board Bench-----365 raw and 425 shirt bench is struggling to get back on track
Band 3 Board---3's---135, 185, 225, 275, 315x1 (with 2 forced reps after) + minis 1 rep short of matching PR
Kroc Row----100x10/10, 150x30/30 .... PR +2/2 reps each side i'm starting to wish for a heavier dumbbell because reps are killing me, wanted to puke after this
Rear Delt Flys----100x10, 120x10, 140x10, 160x10
bench was disappointing but that was expected. at least as raw goes, 365 was much tougher than i wanted. the shirted number is only 20lbs lighter than my PR which is not too bad considering the 6 week injury and a 15lb BW loss. woke up this morning at a cool 273. more tonight

ME Upper thursday 7-8-10
Reverse Bench---worked up to 500, missed 545 raw, then 545 shirt.....blue bands 405x10
Band JM Presses----95x5, 135x3, 185x3x5 + doubled minis
Face Pulls----4x25---blue band
Pull Ups-----10, 8, 8, 4 = 30 reps @ 275 i want this number back up
decent day. early morning training on empty stomach is not ideal but whatever. missed with 545/ blues about 3 inches above chest. figured i wouldn't hit this seeing as i haven't pressed the past month. That's my PR with blues so im going to have to work hard to get the bench back on track. stuff to do tomorrow so DE Lower will probably be on Saturday. Monday i'll get back into the groove. more later

This was a full hip replacement on left side. Stems from an old injury from a car accident that finally caught up with me at a bench press meet (planting the feet)). Doctor says don't abuse it and it might last 25 years or more. Feels great - better than my right side!
